Christmas is a magical time of the year with Christmas markets blossoming all over Europe. One of our favorites (perhaps because it is close to home) is the Montreux Christmas market, which takes place every year from late November until Christmas.

Montreux is located on the shore of Lake Leman, about 90 kilometers from Geneva and 30 kilometers from Lausanne. Montreux is very easily reachable by car but the Christmas market is usually very crowded and, for such reason, it is recommended to travel by public transport (finding a parking space may be a challenge during this time of the year).
With that in mind, we decided to take the train on a cold Sunday afternoon to visit the Montreux market.
The city is covered with Christmas decorations from the moment you leave the station.

During one month, the lakeside promenade is flooded with wooden chalets offering all types of crafts, entertainment, food and drinks.

And, of course, magnificent views of the Lake Leman.

During the visit, you can taste the typical vin chaud (hot wine), the Christmas tea or enjoy a local dish, such as fondue or raclette.
There is also a huge Ferris wheel from where it is possible to enjoy a panoramic view of Lake Leman and the Christmas market.

And if you are lucky enough you can enjoy Santa’s visit in his flying sleigh.

The Montreux Christmas market is probably not the most popular or advertised market in Europe but it has a wonderful atmosphere, which makes it one of our favorites.
